Central Richmond encompasses an abundance of Shanghainese restaurants, this casual establishment in particular being a local favorite. With a large loyal following due to its reasonable prices and highly acclaimed xiao long baos, expect to wait for a seat even with a reservation.  It’s certainly not the comfiest setting to dine in, or quietest to say the least, but it does serve an endless amount of authentic choices that are sure to leave one satisfied if yearning for a feast. As a warning though, the space is rather cramped and often you might be placed with another group during peak hours. The place is also understaffed and majority of the servers are not observant, so they have to be flagged down frequently for questions. I’ve considered this restaurant as the “best” for the majority of my life, but after my past experience where I found the food quality to have dropped, I might have to say Suhang might be my preferred choice.

20131114-214444.jpgSticky rice with flossed pork – Seemed easily replicable at home and wouldn’t order it again.20131114-214451.jpgXiao long bao – The main reason why many visit this restaurant – their wrapping is so thin it’s almost translucent. The pork filling was juicy and flavourful, and had a decent amount of soup base that poured out each bite. I found that however, our batch was inconsistent and some of them didn’t have the liquid. 20131114-214457.jpgNiangao with edamame and pork – One of my favorite dishes but it was disappointing this time around compared to my last visit. The portion was smaller with usage of less ingredients, lacking the depth of flavour that comes typically comes from a nice toss in the wok. 20131114-214505.jpgRadish cakes – Flaky, crispy crust with toasted sesame seeds. The radish filling was a little too salty, but I still found myself enjoying them.
