Nook Pizzeria

Nook’s location in Kitsilano  has been open for several months, but it recently started serving brunch. As the brunch addict I am, I willingly made a visit. 20131221-211907.jpgThe interior exudes simplicity (like The Flying Pig) with their usage of wooden tables and plain cutlery, a trend we have witnessed in Vancouver’s hustling food scene. When we arrived, it was close to their end of brunch service, but we were welcomed nonetheless. The ambiance is relaxing and comfortable, where you could spend hours catching up over some Italian fare without feeling rushed. 20131221-211929.jpgWe were presented with complimentary scones, which is such a great gesture to start a meal. The outside was firm, but it retained a crumbly centre. I enjoyed these because I love biting into a hard shell, only to be left with a contrasting texture incased. They weren’t overly sweet too. I found it weird though that they gave us three rather than an equal portion for both of us. Maybe it was for presentation sake, but I would have preferred getting the same amount to prevent awkwardness. 20131221-211941.jpgThe Baked Ricotta Crostini

  • I pictured the ricotta already spread on the crostini, but I believe that is only for the dinner service
  • The crostini was delicious, nicely grilled but still chewy on the inside
  • I was disappointed however with the dip though I might have had too high expectations for the dish
  • It was creamy and flavourful on the crostini, but it didn’t provide a “foodgasm” response from me
  • On its own, it was rather too rich and the olive oil drizzled overpowered the taste of the ricotta 20131221-211950.jpg

Italian Sausage, chilies, sweet onions, roast peppers with egg pizza

  • Loved the crust at Nook – chewy and crispy but didn’t have a lingering flour or yeast taste
  • Flavourful ingredients that added substance in each bite
  • The egg however I would skip adding next time because it didn’t really provide significant flavour in my opinion

  • Wouldn’t re-order either
  • the potatoes could have been easily replicated at home and they lacked seasoning
  • liked the addition of the parmigiano-reggiano shavings, but it didn’t compensate for the blandness in the potatoes

Though there were some hits and misses in the dishes, I see myself revisiting because I really enjoyed the atmosphere and their list of daily specials on the board. The service wasn’t stellar as I found them not as interested in their clients, but it is a cozy place where I am sure will be enjoyed by anyone wanting some straight-forward comfort food.
