Homer St. Café & Bar

We were originally planning to go to Finch’s for an early lunch, but unfortunately, we discovered they were closed that day. With Homer St. Cafe on my list of restaurants to try, I decided to bring my sister there so I could finally check the place out and see what the rave was all about. 20131230-212236.jpgStepping inside the restaurant, I immediately fell in love with the space. It is absolutely beautiful and different from the new restaurants that are popping up which are focused on simplicity with a modern take. The romantic and contemporary feel reminded me of Hotel Georgia’s private dining room that they use for their buffets. For a restaurant that prides in serving rotisserie chicken, I was definitely surprised of the enchanting impact it had on myself. It seems like a great place for celebrating with big groups because of the multiple spaces divided by the design. 20131230-212243.jpgThe complimentary bread served. It was a sourdough with drizzled olive oil and rosemary garnish. 20131230-212249.jpgLamb Sirloin, Goat Cheese, and Chimichurri Sourdough Sandwich with Salad ($14) – Paninis are very hard to do wrong and this was pretty darn delicious in my opinion. The generous portion of sliced lamb was juicy and tender, seared enough to display a rosy pink hue in the centre. The goat cheese went well in combination with the greens and sweet onions, not overpowering as I had presumed. The bread was chewy, yet crisp, nicely grilled with some slight charring. I couldn’t really taste the sourdough aspect but I still found it great for sandwiching the ingredients together. The chimichurri was lost, but I didn’t mind because it was still good. The salad however, was a complete no for me. It was their feature for the day (extra $1.50) with pickled grapes, frisee, hazelnuts, blue cheese, and red wine vinaigrette. It sounded interesting, but there were so many strong flavours going on in each bite that I couldn’t really appreciate the ingredients. Still, I might note that it could also be the fact that I am not a big fan of blue cheese and the pungency of it ruined the chance of it being a perfectly adequate salad on my part.20131230-212311.jpgGrilled Beef Steak, Baked Scalloped Potatoes, Brandy Jus ($22) – Solid steak. My sister appreciated how it was already cut so she didn’t have to.

Overall, I did find myself having a pleasant time. The hostess and server we had were lovely and amiable, though I did find the staff sometimes to carry a disconcerting vibe. I do see a revisit to try their house-acclaimed rotisserie chicken as well as their dinner service because of how much I enjoyed the atmosphere.
