Lily Mae’s Comfort Café

A quaint little café nestled in one of Gastown’s prime restaurant locations, Lily Mae’s exudes coziness upon entering. The use of pastel shades and vintage-style decor make it a beautiful and adorable two-level restaurant that is sure to attract a romantic crowd. The space is however quite compact and I presume it can only fit a maximum of 20 people. Yet, with that being said, if one plans on having a girly celebration, this is certainly the place to visit because the atmosphere is so intimate and warm, and with all the lovely girly trimmings, it certainly can do no wrong. 20130815-182844.jpg

20130815-182849.jpgVegetable Wrap with Seafood Chowder ($13) – Was not too impressed with the  flavours for both aspects of the dish. The daily soup was served lukewarm and didn’t taste as good as it sounded when described. The texture wasn’t very creamy and there was a lack of ingredients used. The wrap was served cold and had a strong garlic hummus which I enjoyed. Yet, it was something that could be easily replicated at home. 20130815-182857.jpgStrawberry scone ($3.50)20130815-182853.jpgSeafood Clubhouse with fries ($14) – My friend and I decided to share the vegetable and seafood clubhouse so we each tried a piece of each other’s sandwich. This sandwich in particular had all the fixings of crab salad, pepper, bacon, tomato, arugula, red pepper and basil pesto. Flavour wise, it wasn’t bad and definitely filling, but I was dissapointed that they used imitation crab meat. I should have expected it with the price point, but I wish it was stated clearly on the menu. The clubhouse itself was not heavily dressed and the basil pesto spread acted as a nice flavourful and delicious binding agent.

Truth be told, I wasn’t head over heels with the food served here. Maybe I came in having too high expectations, but nothing blew me away. Still, I do see myself coming back just because the service here was incredible, maybe the best I’ve ever had. Our server was such a sweetheart and made my table feel so lovely and welcomed. She checked up on us to see how we were doing and never rushed us into ordering. As well, she was very accommodating to my friend who wanted something light by offering a fresh house-made scone from the morning as a substitute. The restaurant itself seems very fitting for a relaxing meal especially in the colder months because of its snuggly and comfy ambiance. I definitely see a revisit for their brunch menu.
